Hey guys I have a pretty weird and super annoying problem. So a few weeks ago my "B" and "N" keys started acting weird. Meaning that it would not register when I press it. This happened occasionally. However, at September 4, 2019, my B and N keys just outright stopped working. When I restarted, other keys started also malfunctioning, such as the esc, caps lock, q keys. So I went over to HP forums and started browsing for a solution. The first solution I tried is to uninstall and update my drivers. I did that and there was no success. Second solution I tried was to try to type in the command prompt. Again, there was no success. I got fed up so I plugged in an external keyboard in my laptop. I restarted it (by pressing esc in the external keyboard), and tried to do the component test. However, I soon found out that there was no option for a component test, only memory test and hard drive test.

So now you guys are probably thinking that this is a hardware issue, but heres where it becomes extremely weird. I  restarted my laptop with my external keyboard plugged in. When I got to the windows login screen I noticed that my external keyboard could only type certain letters, meaning some keys were not registering. Then I found out that the EXACT same keys that were malfunctioning in the laptop was the EXACT same keys that were not registering in my EXTERNAL keyboard. This literally shocked me, so I quickly unplugged my external keyboard and plugged it in my PC and it worked perfectly.

Conclusion: I believe this is a software bug? Any help is appreciated since I am starting university tomorrow and have no laptop. Thanks!

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.

BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Next, uninstall Keyboard device from device manager.

  1. Use shortcut keys Win + X on Windows 10.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the entry. Right-click the Keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
  4. You may need to check the option Delete the driver software for this device, and then click the Uninstall button.
  5. Reboot the computer.
