Hello I was wondering if someone can assist me with a issue regarding my laptop? I have an ENVY x360, this laptop was working fine but one day when i went to turn it on the screen was blank and the caps lock started flashing 3 long 2 short like morse code? Is this the issue why the laptop is no longer working I briefly seen someone say online that this issue is cause by the RAM but I just wanted to make sure before I start buying parts
Thank you for your time and thank you in advance
Kind regards

Hi @ShaunH5860,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for sharing the details. The Caps Lock blinking pattern (3 long, 2 short) on HP laptops is a diagnostic code. For HP systems, this specific pattern usually indicates a memory (RAM) issue.
What the Blink Code Means
- 3 long and 2 short blinks = Memory module failure or memory not detected.
- This can happen if:
- RAM is loose or improperly seated.
- RAM is faulty.
- The motherboard memory slot is damaged.
Steps to Fix
- Power Reset
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect and try to boot.
- Reseat RAM
- Remove the back cover.
- Take out the RAM sticks.
- Clean contacts gently and reinsert firmly.
- Test RAM
- If you have two sticks, try booting with one at a time.
- Swap slots to rule out slot damage.
- Run HP Diagnostics
- Press Esc repeatedly at startup → F2 for HP Diagnostics.
- Run Memory Test.
- Replace RAM if Faulty
- If diagnostics fail, you’ll need a compatible RAM module.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello thank you for your reply. I can confirm that I have tried all steps stated.
Rebooting with no effect
I have 2x 8GB PC24 RAM even with one at a time still no look so am not sure if its something to do with the motherboard or both ram cards.
I'll order some new ones and see if that resolves the issue.
Kind regards
Shaun

Hi @ShaunH5860,
Thanks for the update, and good job testing each module individually. Since both sticks fail to POST, even one at a time, here’s what that usually indicates:
What your testing already confirms
- Unlikely, both RAM sticks failed at the same time, but it can happen.
- Motherboard slot or memory controller issue becomes more likely when:
- Neither stick works individually
- Clearing CMOS / power drain doesn’t help
- The system still won’t POST with known-good RAM installed
A few extra checks before buying new RAM
You’ve already tried the key steps, but here are two quick confirmations that sometimes help:
- Inspect RAM slots carefully
Look for:- Bent pins
- Dust or debris
- Latch not fully locking
- Slight discolouration or burned area
- Try a CMOS reset (full method)
- Disconnect power
- Remove battery (if removable)
- Hold the power button 20–30 seconds
- Reinstall the battery and power
This resets memory training.
- Check for correct DDR5/DDR4 type (if desktop/laptop-specific)
The Argos listing or model number can help verify compatibility.
💡 Ordering a new set is a good next step
If the new RAM works → the original sticks were faulty.
If new RAM still doesn’t work → the fault is almost certainly on the motherboard (memory controller, slot failure, or BIOS corruption).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hey @VikramTheGreat
thank you for your feed back, I can confirm that I have checked and all pins and ports for any defects and can confirm that there all fine, no misshapen or discoloured, When I was at my partner the laptop slide from the bed and landed sideways on the floor it wasn't a heavy bang as it landed on a matt that was on top pf the carpet, afterwards it was not turning on, I left it in my bedroom for around 12 months and when I went back to it I took the RAM and SSD out to check to see what parts I needed to order and after returning them back to the laptop it powered up and was working for a bout 7-8 hours before shutting off and not working again, so am not sure if it was the RAM or if something else has happened when it dropped to the floor? I am upset with myself because when I logged on to HP to ask for assistance I notice that the warranty expired Jan this year 😞
I will have another look and I will follow the steps that you have mentioned and I will update you on what happens, Again thank you for taking the time to answer my question, much appreciated.
Have a wonderful day.
Shaun.
