I have a HP2000-2d19wm.  Had Windows 8 on it.  Kept getting error code 3f0.  Have since replaced Windows with Debian (kali).  Have not had the HDD error in months.  Booted TAILS from DVD, ran a disk benchmark, and the hard drive returns to normal.  Question:

Is the hard drive bad?

Is something else wrong?

Everything is original except for the OS.

Western Digital has a Blue option (5400 rpm) and a Black option (7200 rpm).  Would like to know what I should look for before replacing the hard drive.  Any reason to not get the Black (7200 rpm) drive?  Should I keep the 320 Gig size?

Sometimes formatting will make the problem vanish-for awhile. It likely will resurface at some point. Your Service Manual says 350- 750gb hdd is supported. No limit on 5400 vs 7200 .Either will work fine but 7200 is a little faster but also runs a little warmer.

Have been able to get a couple more months out of the drive, but the problem I had with Windows 8, failing to detect the drive (3f0 error), formatting, installing Linux, and having the same problem reoccur.

Suspect increasing memory to 8 Gig and replacing the hard drive with 350 Gig, 7200 rpm drive will increase the performance and usability for several years.

Debian works great on this laptop.  CPU usage seems high, around 85%.  Maybe too much running.
