HP Pavilion g6-1374sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
When I turned on my laptop a couple days ago I was greeted by a message telling me to back up important files and run the hard disk test in the diagnostic menu.

I ran the test (quick version) and it failed with the error id U0BSKF-62794B-MFXP01-60C703. I have noticed that it has been taking a considerable amount of time when booting before I got the message but thought it was just due to old age.

If someone could explain the error code and what it means and what options I have, it’d be extremely appreciated.
My laptop is a HP Pavilion g6-1374sa and the product id in the hard disk test was A8J59EA#ABU

Hello Ben531,

The Failure ID in your case refers to an unavoidable hard drive (hardware) failure.

If you are unable to back up your files, you can opt for a USB to SATA adapter.

If you are under warranty, contact HP:

Contact HP Worldwide here.

Phone HP Worldwide here.

Check warranty status here.

Find an HP Authorized Service Center near you here.

If you are not under warranty (which I'm assuming you're not), the hard drive must be replaced. Any reputable brand will work but an SSD is ultimately recommended.

Steps to a replacement of the hard drive are located on pages 48-49 of your computer's Maintenance and Service Guide. It's easily accessible through the service door located on the back.

Please post back with further inquiries, if any.

Best regards,

Eddy

Thanks for the quick and straightforward answer, just out of curiosity what can cause a hard drive to fail. Do you think it’s something I did or just old age?

Hello Ben531,

Glad to be of assistance.

Hard drives may fail due to accidental drops and damage, but in this case, considering that this laptop is fairly old, it's safe to assume that the drive has simply died of age.

Hard drives usually die within 3-5 years.

All the best,

Eddy

Thank you again very timely and informative.

Seems about right seeing as my laptop is coming up to around 5 and 3/4 years old. Guess that means it did me well.
