Hello,
When I turn on my laptop it appears the HP logo and afterwards a black screen and nothing else happens. After a while it used to appear a blue screen with the error "Unmontable Boot Volume". Now, after the HP logo nothing happens. I have tried to boot my laptop from a USB (I changed the BIOS accordingly) but nothing happend. I run the HP System Extensive Test and it says "Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED".
FAILURE ID: M89G90-883A2B-XD7X7G-60Q403
Hard Drive 1 - Primary HDD Bay*
I am aware that I have to replace the HDD, but I would like to know how I can do that. Also, I am considering puting a 1TB SSD, will it work? I would also like to know how I can get Windows 10 (64-bit) for free, since it came directly with the laptop and I assume that when I replace the HDD Windows won't be in the laptop anymore.
My laptop is HP Notebook - 15-ay031ns (ENERGY STAR), 12 GB of RAM, Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance for your help 😊
BR,
Joan.

Hi, Joan:
Yes, you will need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05087748
You should be able to replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD of any size up to 2 TB.
There are a couple of ways to reinstall W10 for free on the new drive.
You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive, which will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.
Here is an info link for how to use that utility...

If for some reason the cloud recovery tool doesn't work, you can also reinstall W10 for free by creating a bootable W10 installation USB flash drive from the link below.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.
