I have an HP 15 Laptop PC I bought today and when I turned it on, the hard drive would click one time, make a buzzing sound lasting around half a second, then click normally like any old hard drive does, there is also a desktop PC in my house that also makes this sound when it's booted up, are the two PCs hard drives going bad?

@james195 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are getting the buzzing noise from the hard drive.

Please perform the hard reset and check.

Hard Reset:

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.

3) Remove the Battery. ( not for Built-in Battery computer )

4) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.

5) Plug-in the Adapter and put the Battery back into the computer if it's a (removable battery)

6) Try to turn on the computer and check.

Also, perform the hard drive test.

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.

3) Press F2 once.

4) Go to Component test.

5) From the list, run the Hard Drive (extensive) test.

Please let us know while performing the hard drive test are you getting noise from the hard drive.

I did the disc check and the hard reset and it came back as healthy, but I still hear the buzzing sound, I'm not sure if this buzzing is normal for these hard drives or if it means it's going bad, it shouldn't be going bad because I had just bought the computer.

@james195

The loud buzzing noise is not normal. It's an indication the Hard drive is slowly failing even though it might still be working right now

Do you think the buzzing sound is coming from the motor that spins the platters or from the actuator arm with the read and write heads, to me it sounds like it's from the actuator arm

HP Recommended

@james195

It could be the actuator arm. But the complete drive needs to be changed

I have a Pavilion laptop 15-br010nr with a noisy hard drive and I'm sure it needs to be replaced.  Are there any SSD's compatible with this laptop?
