Here is hard drive replacement technique in a video. Not too difficult.

Your laptop can use any 2.5 inch wide and 9.5 or 7 mm thick SATA laptop hard drive or solid state drive. Although they are a bit more expensive, I always recommend a solid state drive in lieu of a mechanical drive since the performance upgrade is something you have to see to believe. Most people who have gone to SSD swear they will never go back to a mechnical HDD. However, some folks are on a budget I know. Laptop hard drives are no longer exotic items. You can pick one up at Best Buy or even Office Depot or order one delivered in 2 days from amazon.com

Here is a good example of a 1 TB 7200 rpm hard drive:

Here is a 480 gig SSD:

Post back if you need more help. Was the laptop every upgraded to Windows 10?

That means the hard drive needs replacement. Post back with the country you live in and we can help find a hard drive for you and installation instructions. Did you make recovery disks for it?

I live in the USA. Thank you for your response and help. I feel lost - don't know how to proceed. I do believe I made recovery discs... I must go look for them. Please do help me find a replacement or can you give me the product number for the correct hard drive and I can start looking as well on eBay?

If it was upgraded to 10 and activated this is going to be a piece of cake. Microsoft makes Windows 10 available to just download and make into a DVD or bootable thumb drive.

Okay. So how large of a thumb drive do I need?

And how do I go about downloading Windows 10 to the thumb drive? From Microsoft's website or my laptop?

Rebecca:

It's all here.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

Thumb drive needs to be at least 4 gigs. You download it from the internet by following the links above. Pick the same Windows 10 version as was on the laptop (e.g. 64 bit Home) and the website will walk you through preparation of the thumb drive.

You put in the new blank drive, boot from the thumb drive, follow the onscreen prompts and you will have Windows 10 on the laptop. We can add any drivers or anything else you need after that.
