The usb sound card is definitely the way to go. Even if you find a way to get the guitar jacked into the mic port the fidelity will not be good.

Hi,

 

Chances are the port works like with the headphones that have mic and only one connector but then again try to test the port with a set of headphones to see if it works and if possible iwth a microphone. I'm not entirely sure but i think you need to play with "Recording devices" and set the port as the default recording the device.

 

Alternativeley, try an external USB sound card with a Line in functon ?
