HP ZBook Studio x360 G5 Convertible Workstation IDS Base Model

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a way to access the sealed SIM card slot on a machine that was ordered without WWAN?

I have a ZBook Studio x360 G5 (2019) that is still in near brand-new condition. I would like to add WWAN capability to the notebook because I did not choose the option when I ordered it but because of the way I work, I have realised the benefit of not having to rely on WiFi with my oher notebooks.

I have a WWAN card that I have sourced from another machine and the antennas are already in place. It's a shame that I can connect everything but not use the SIM.

I read on another post that the slot is sealed so that customers don't try to use the SIM tray when there is no WWAN card: That doesn't make sense to me because the antennas have clearly been installed at the factory but the machine is prevented from being upgraded to use a SIM later.

I hope somone has some experience in getting past this point. I would love to get a couple more years out of this machine. Despite it's age, it really is still in pristine condition and I'm not ready to make it obbsolete yet.

Thanks in advance,

DannyB07

OK, so the sim slot has not been sealed. Rather, the plastic insert in the top cover could not be removed from outside - it is not spring loaded bezel - like the one on my Elitebook. However, I was able to poke it out from the inside by removing the base cover.  I can now insert my SIM card.

However, anyone who can help me continue on this journey, please see my next question in the community titled : Compatible WWAN upgrade for ZBook Studio x360 G5"

Thanks.

Thanks. Unfortunately, the system board on the G3 is different to the one on my G5. On my G5, the SIM enclosure appears to be on the underside of the system board when the base cover is removed (i.e. the side closest to the keyboard). I think I can only access it by removing the system board. I guess that's why HP put a slot on the top cover ... and then sealed it up again. 🙄
