I have been given a HP pc monitor but no cables or knowledge of how to conet it to my laptop. 

Laptop is - Notebook  serial number CND5492FPL the monitor  is HP compaq LE2002x . 

So firstly what type of cable do i need to connet them - then what do I need to do to get them to work together .

The notebook has an HDMI output.

 

You could purchase a DVI to HDMI cable. That is the least expensive option. See the cable at the link. You need to find one of these in your region of the world.

Another solution, and it would be my preferred solution, would be to purchase a display that has an HDMI input. Then all you would need is an HDMI cable to connect the two.

Kindly provide an HP product number or complete product name.

 

You provided a serial number. That is ok if you are directly requesting service from HP but not from the forum.

 

The serial number does not help me find specific information about your laptop. If you would like to have specific  and accurate information from the forum you will have to provide specific identification, as requested, of your HP laptop.

 

On the bottom of your notebook in tiny characters there is a product name and product number (ProdID).

 

Post that information here in your thread.

Hi Ercio, Thank you for the information , it is very helpful. As I said the screen was given to me so for now at least I think I will buy the cable that you recommended to see if having two screens is practical space wise and useful enough for me to consider sending more on a newer screen .
