Thank you for the reply. 

After replacing the drive, I got the message "E: \ The directory name is invalid".

After searching (unsuccsessfully) for a solution on the internet,

I decided to unplug the drive and then plug it back in while the PC  powered was up. It immediately recognized the new drive as a CD/DVD drive. 

Everything is working fine now.
