Hi @jennifer288,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
Sorry for the inconvenience caused and don’t worry let me help you.
To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?
- Does the slowdown happen mainly when browsing the web, opening apps, or during startup?
- Have you noticed if the fan runs loudly or the laptop gets unusually warm?
- Do you recall if the system has ever prompted you for updates recently, or if you’ve installed any large programs in the past few weeks?
Steps to Try
- Windows & HP Updates: Make sure Windows Update and HP Support Assistant have installed the latest drivers, firmware, and BIOS updates. These often improve performance and stability.
- Check Startup Programs: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager → Startup tab. Disable unnecessary apps that launch at startup.
- Disk Cleanup: Use Storage Sense in Windows settings to clear temporary files and free up space.
- Check for Malware: Run a full scan with Windows Security or your preferred antivirus to rule out background processes slowing things down.
- Performance Settings: In Control Panel → Power Options, select High Performance or Balanced mode rather than Power Saver.
- Resource Monitor: Open Task Manager and check CPU, memory, and disk usage. If one resource is consistently maxed out, that points to what’s causing the slowdown.
If the laptop continues to slow down even after updates and cleanup, we may need to look at whether the SSD or memory is being stressed, especially since refurbished devices sometimes have older components.
I hope this helps.
