Hi @Chandanreddy

Welcome to the HP Support Community. Thanks for bringing this to our notice.

I see that the left control key is not working on your HP Spectre system. Do not worry we are here to help you fix the issue.

May I know from when are you facing this issue?

Have you tried checking with an external keyboard?

May I know if you have made any recent hardware or software-related changes to your system?

To check if Ctrl keys work on the Onscreen keyboard. Press Windows Key + R and type osk and hit Enter. Try using Ctrl keys and check if that helps.

Check if any key on the keyboard has got stuck or pressed.

Try the steps recommended below.

Try restoring the BIOS to default.

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.
Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.
Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.
Restart the notebook. Right-click Start (), select Shut down or sign out, then select Restart.
Wait for the computer to restart and open Windows.

Method 1: Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with the Bluetooth adapter. Refer to these steps:

Press Windows key + X, and select Control panel.

Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.

Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.

Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

Also, try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC assist you better.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately I have tried all the below options.

Once after reinstalling OS to factory reset, using cloud recovery method, the Ctrl key worked.

But, after windows updates it stopped working. Tried factory reset several times but still no luck.

It even worked during UEFI components diagnostic after 1st factory reset. Post that UEFI is giving error during boot saying "the command file is missing or not formatted" and exits.

Can someone please help.

I see this problem in several places in this community. Especially spectre laptops.

Thank you

Thanks for your response.

Could you please connect an external keyboard to your system and check if the issue persists?

Let me know.

Hi All,

Even after connecting newly purchased HP keyboard, the Left Ctrl key is not working.

Tried all the methods mentioned above.

I have hardly used this notebook for 10 times.

Extremely disappointed, it is HPs most expensive and premium laptops.

Can someone please help.

Thanks for your response.

I am really sorry that you are facing issues with it. This is a software related issue.

I would suggest you perform a reset again using the cloud recovery and pause the updates.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi,

We tried resetting to factory reset by reinstalling OS using HP cloud recovery tool as well as fresh windows 10 reinstall, both methods are not working.

Getting error while trying to perform UEFI during boot

Error : Command file missing or not formatted and exits after 30 seconds.

2nd Problem :

Entire keyboard does NOT work during restart, until unless you click on on screen keyboard and type one key, then keyboard starts responding with left Ctrl key still not working.

Somewhere I read that this is a very common issue in HP Spectre x360 CONVERTIBLE Laptops and might have to do with Tablet mode, touch screen and Sensor.

Can Hp team please further investigate deeply as this problem is faced by many HP laptop owners, you can Google and search on youtube.

This has something to do with your Limited, outdated, unsupportive Drivers.

ONLY HP has to provide a solution, as my laptop is not usable without keyboard. Now I feel I should never have purchased HP laptop. As, I am not getting any support from HP India nor HP USA, as this laptop was purchased in the US.

Just providing generic solutions like resetting, reinstall windows etc will not help.

HP you can please let me know if you can escalate and fix this problem or openly say that you are helpless.

This is your flagship laptop and most expensive one. Has become useless after hardly 10 times of usage.

Thank you
