I need advice on whether I can replace the existing 1TB HDD with an SSD.  if so, do I have to have a 1TB SSD?  Do you have a recommendation for a product?  I also would like a recommendation of increasing the RAM.  Currently there is 8GB... do I need more in order to use the SSD efficiently?

Appreciate your help.

The specs of your machine is

   https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05530910

It has   8 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB) on slot 1 now. You can add 8GB to slot 2 to have 16GB (max) using

Note: 2400MHz will run at 2133 MHz automatically

You can also replace  its 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA with 1TB 2.5" SSD using

      https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/hp-15-bs015dx/CT11523658    or

      https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/hp-15-bs015dx/CT11364206

Other option : add 1TB of M.2 SATA SSD to your machine and keep the existing HDD

People do not read very well 🙂

No you don't have to buy a 1TB ssd. IFor an example: f you only use 200GB on your harddrive now I would buy a 250GB ssd or 500GB.

For 'normal' use (watching video, typing reports or browser use) 8GB of ram is more than enough.  16GB won't make the ssd go faster.

Be aware when replacing the harddrive you need te reinstall the whole laptop or restore from a backup.

Hi,

Well, I agree that he doesn't need a TB solid drive but in order to restore the backup he needs a drive of the same/bigger capacity or the factory reset won't work. I also agree that 8GB is enough with a solid drive in the system and for ordinary pc work.:)
