Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

There was a short circuit in my motherboard a month back, the adapter was at fault. I got it repaired and while I was at it, I got a new SDD to increase my memory.

The click sound started after that, at first it was coming from around the speaker/hinge area. Then I focused, and I felt like it was coming from the HDD. I immediately took the hard drive out and ran the computer, no voice!

I replaced the HDD, back upped all the data and started doing all the diagnostic things mentioned on  support sites. Ran the crystal disk utility and everything seems fine. The sound isn't a constant click or a grind, rather it comes once in a while; a loud two part noise. I have a theory that maybe it happens when the HDD starts/stops rotating? I'm not sure. Likewise, I don't know if there is a PSU fan in my laptop that may've been affected during the repair.

I've scratched my head at this, it is making me anxious right now. Please help me with this.

If you only get the click with the harddrive in, I would suggest that you have a drive that is starting to fail and your best course would be to replace.  Utilities are great but do not always spot every issue. The cost of a new drive is very low these days and you could always change it to an SSD drive to reduce power consumption and have an even quieter laptop.

Isn't there any way to actually diagnose the issue? I read somewhere that there is a noise every time the disks start/stop rotating. Can that be it?

Plus I want to know if my Laptop has a PSU fan because that would explain everything.

Thanks for the reply though.
