Hi @paulwelts,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

ld you clarify a few details to narrow down the issue?

  1. When you press Shift + 2 (or Shift + ' “ key, depending on your keyboard layout), what happens?
  2. Did this start after a Windows update or any recent change?
  3. What keyboard language/layout is currently set on your laptop? (e.g., US, UK, Canadian, etc.)
  4. Does the keyboard work normally for other symbols?

Here are a few things you can try in the meantime:

1. Check your keyboard layout

Sometimes Windows switches layouts accidentally.

Go to:
Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region
Make sure your layout matches your physical keyboard (e.g., US or UK).

You can also press:
Windows key + Spacebar
to toggle between installed keyboard layouts.

2. Test both combinations

Depending on your region:

  • US keyboard: Shift + 2 = @
  • UK keyboard: Shift + ' (apostrophe) = @

Try both to see if the symbol appears.

3. Test the @ symbol using the on-screen keyboard

Search for On-Screen Keyboard in the Start menu and try pressing Shift + 2 there.
If it works, your physical keyboard may have a key issue.

4. Check if the Fn key is locked

Try pressing:
Fn + Esc
This toggles Function Lock on many HP models.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead!

Best regards,

Deep_World
