Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello,

I'm in a relatively complex situation where my laptop cannot start up. I can't find any appropriate way to explain the whole problem without giving the story, so here goes nothing:

When I originally purchased this laptop, it came onboard with Windows 8.1 (64-bit). About 2 years later, the hard drive warned of failing. So, I replaced the hard drive in spite of the oddly short lifespan. A little over a year later, I began exploring many Linux distributions. The last one I installed before everything failed on me was Qubes OS, which didn't properly install. Afterward, turning the laptop in resulted in nothing but the caps lock light flashing twice, stopping, and repeat. I have seen no way of bypassing this. I have tried both the Windows key + B and Windows Key + V methods of attempting to recover the BIOS, with no success.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel safe to say I can rule out hard drive failure as the problem. Because if the hard drive has failed, I would think I would at least be able to go into the BIOS off of RAM or something (plus it's the same if I plug in an external hard drive, too). Normally with technical situations I try to solve things myself (since I have a little bit of experience, but not too much), but I have never had to replace the BIOS before, which is why I am asking here about this problem. So, what do you think is the source of the problem? BIOS, hard drive, RAM, etc.? Will I perhaps have to get the physical BIOS chip to boot up again?

Thanks ahead of time for any help

Hi
Hopefully one of these documents will cover (and solve) your problem...

https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c00042629
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

Turn off the computer, and then connect the power cord.
Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds.
Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps.
The HP BIOS Update screen displays and the recovery begins automatically. Follow any on-screen prompts to continue the startup to complete the recovery.
HP BIOS Update recovery in progress

If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows key and the V key. If the screen still does not display, your computer might not support the feature or there is a hard drive issue. Continue to the next step to install a BIOS recovery file from the HP website.
If the Power light turns off, the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the button for only 2 to 3 seconds.

If in doubt please ask.
