Hi @tresa1957
Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
1. Check if the Arrow Keys Are Physically Stuck or Dirty
- Inspect the keys: Ensure that none of the arrow keys are physically stuck or obstructed. Sometimes dirt, dust, or crumbs can get under the keys and prevent them from working correctly.
- Clean the keyboard: Turn off your laptop and gently clean around the arrow keys using compressed air or a soft cloth.
2. Check Keyboard Settings
- Sticky Keys / Filter Keys:
- Press Shift five times to see if Sticky Keys is enabled. If it is, disable it.
- Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and turn off Sticky Keys and Filter Keys if they're enabled.
3. Test the Keyboard in Different Applications
- Open different programs, such as Notepad, Word, or a browser, and see if the arrow keys work in all of them.
- If the arrow keys work in some applications but not in others, the problem may be software-specific (e.g., a particular app or web page).
4. Test the Keyboard Using On-Screen Keyboard:
- Press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Try using the arrow keys on the On-Screen Keyboard and see if they work.
5. Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers
- Update Drivers:
- Right-click the Start menu and choose Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboards section and right-click on Standard PS/2 Keyboard (or whatever keyboard you see listed).
- Choose Update driver and let Windows search for an updated driver.
- Reinstall Drivers:
- In Device Manager, right-click the keyboard and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the keyboard driver.
6. Check for Windows Updates
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Check for updates and install any available updates.
7. Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts
- Boot into Safe Mode:
- Restart your laptop and press F8 repeatedly during boot.
- Select Safe Mode and see if the arrow keys work. If they do, then the issue may be caused by third-party software.
8. Reset the Laptop (If Necessary)
System Restore:
- Search for Create a restore point in the Windows search bar.
- Click System Restore and follow the on-screen instructions to restore your laptop to a point when the arrow keys were working correctly.
Reset this PC:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, click Get Started. You can choose to keep your files or remove everything
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
-Regards
