I'm trying to find a good 3080 graphics card that will fit in my HP OMEN - 25L Gaming Desktop and that won't break the bank. I also saw that power supply matters, can you tell I don't know a lot about computers? How do I check that and what other considerations are there when upgrading. is the i5 that I have still alright?

Hi @BelTemplar,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

Upgrading your HP OMEN 25L Gaming Desktop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 is a significant performance boost but requires careful consideration to ensure compatibility with your system.

Here's how to proceed:

1. Choosing a GeForce RTX 3080

  • Size/Dimensions: The HP OMEN 25L has a mid-sized ATX case. Most RTX 3080 models are large (lengths range from 280mm to 320mm), so you'll need to confirm the card's dimensions fit inside your case. The space available for GPUs in the OMEN 25L is typically around 320mm.
  • Cooling: Opt for a dual-fan model if your case has limited airflow or space. Triple-fan models are larger but offer better cooling performance.
  • Brand and Price: Consider trusted brands like ASUS, MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte, or Zotac. Budget options include Zotac Trinity or PNY XLR8 models, which are often more affordable but still reliable.

2. Power Supply (PSU) Requirements

The RTX 3080 is power-hungry and requires a PSU with:

  • Wattage: At least 750W from a reputable brand (Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, etc.) with an 80+ Gold efficiency rating. Some models recommend 850W for added headroom.
  • Connectors: Ensure your PSU has enough PCIe power connectors. The RTX 3080 typically requires 3 x 8-pin PCIe connectors.

To check your current PSU:

  1. Open your case (ensure the PC is powered off and unplugged).
  2. Look for a label on the PSU that indicates its wattage and certification.
  3. If your PSU is underpowered, upgrade to one that meets the requirements.

3. Compatibility with the i5 Processor

Your Intel Core i5 processor will work fine in most cases, but:

  • Ensure it’s not a bottleneck by checking its performance. If it’s a newer i5 (10th gen or later), you should be fine for 1440p or even 4K gaming.
  • If it's an older model, upgrading to a more recent i7 or i9 might help unlock the full potential of the RTX 3080 in CPU-intensive games.

4. Other Considerations

  • Case Airflow: The RTX 3080 generates significant heat. Ensure your case has good airflow. Add extra case fans if necessary.
  • BIOS Updates: Check for a BIOS update on HP’s support site for your OMEN 25L to ensure compatibility with newer GPUs.
  • Physical Installation: Make sure your motherboard has a PCIe x16 slot free (it will if your current GPU is installed).
  • Driver Updates: Install the latest NVIDIA drivers after installing the card.

5. Suggested Affordable RTX 3080 Models

  1. Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 3080 Trinity - Compact and affordable.
  2. PNY GeForce RTX 3080 XLR8 Gaming Revel - Budget-friendly.
  3. EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 XC3 ULTRA GAMING - High-quality cooling in a smaller design.
