HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I need to know if the motherboard for an HP-15-BS115DX will work in my HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR).

Hi:

No it won't.

Thank you for your response. Forgive me, but as an engineer with 30+ years in the profession, I am trained to question EVERYTHING. Would you please explain how you are qualified to KNOW this?

Can I not reroute the ribbon cables for the SD card reader & the ports located on the right side of the device? Are there other components on the board to make it incompatible with my HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) without creating cost prohibitive modifications?

Not having detailed specifications and dimensions make it impossible for me to determine without possession of the physical board to compare to my existing case and hardware.

I appreciate your time and your insight.

Respectively,

Alright then, in your "expert" opinion, what is the most powerful system board that will is compatible with my HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)?

I can see that the platform offers a "795815-501 System board with Intel Core i7-5500U processor and UMA graphics memory for use in non-touch screen models with Windows 8.1 Standard".

I have not used the touch screen in several years, so losing that functionality is not a deal deal-breaker for me.

You're very welcome.

I suppose if you want to drill/dremel holes all over the case to line up the USB/HDMI ports and whatnot, you can put almost any motherboard from a 15" notebook PC in there.

And then you can use your 30 year 'expert' engineering skills to figure out how to attach the different size antenna cables of the 15-r0xx, to the M.2 wifi card the 15-bs1xx models have, along with no doubt, a multitude of other issues--including different power requirements, display inverter cables, and on and on and on.

The list of supported motherboards for the 15-r0xx model series can be found in chapter 3 of the service manual.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04409502

The most powerful board would be:

795814-501  System board with Intel Core i7-5500U processor and 2 GB of discrete graphics memory for use in non-touch screen models with Windows 8.1 Standard.

You would also need the applicable heatsink...and I don't see any heat sinks listed for models with the 5th gen core processors with UMA or discrete graphics.

The closest heat sink I could find is this one...For use in models with discrete graphics and the following Intel processors: i7-4510U, i5-4210U, i3-4005U    HP part # 759881-001

Thank you for your latest response. The additional information is useful.

Alright, after I was able to locate several photos of the HP-15-BS115DX motherboard in my original inquiry, I can see visually how dissimilar the form factor is on these boards. Ergo, I will concur that that particular board is incompatible.

I had found an inexpensive HP laptop that appeared to look much like mine including an optical drive, but without any more information than the model, at that time I was only able to locate the number of the system board.

To be more specific to concerning the touch screen functionality on my HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR), my digital version of the manual states that the "790673-x01 System board with Intel Core i5-5200U processor and 2 GB of discrete graphics memory for use in touch screen models" is the most powerful.

So the 795814-501 System board will be disqualified due to the lack of an applicable heatsink. The same applies for models with the 5th gen core processors with UMA or discrete graphics.

You mentioned the heat sink, HP part # 759881001 is available for use in models with discrete graphics and the following Intel processors: i7-4510U, i5-4210U, and i3- 4005U HP.

Is the heat sink, HP part # 759881001 the only one compatible that HP has available, or are there others that can be used but are available solely through other sources?

I appreciate your time...

You're very welcome.

As far as I am aware, the heat sink I referenced would be the only one available for that configuration.

The manuals are not always 100% accurate, and sometimes information is omitted.

In other words, perhaps HP unintentionally omitted the 5th gen processors as being supported by that part.

While I cannot guarantee it, the heatsink may also work for the 790673-x01 motherboard.

As to where you where you will be able to find these parts, that I do not know.

You would start by searching by the HP part number at the HP parts store at the link below...

I appreciate the link that you sent and your objective comments about the manual. Nearly everything ever written by humans has had omissions and mistakes.

The HeatSink that you cited appears to be one of only two listed. There are but a handful of boards listed in conjunction with those two. Obviously the remaining of the system boards available for this platform cannot be without one of some kind.

Would one of the HeatSinks listed work for the rest, or would another be required? That is anyone's guess without firsthand knowledge.

I managed to narrow down the selection to a few system boards that will definitely work with the two HeatSinks listed:

775395-xxx

System board with Intel Core i3-4005U

801860-xxx

System board with Intel Core i3-5010U

764106-xxx

System board with Intel Core i5-4210U

I limited my choices to ones for use in touch screen models to allow myself the full functionality that it is designed for. Would others from the manual work better? Probably. But without the hard data to review and with HP tech support being a total waste of my valuable time, I will use what I can confirm.

Thank you again for your time and assistance.

Hi:

775395-xxx

System board with Intel Core i3-4005U uses this heatsink:

For use in models with UMA graphics and the following Intel processors: i7-4510U, i5-4210U, i3-4005U 759880-001

801860-xxx

System board with Intel Core i3-5010U probably uses the same one as above.

764106-xxx

System board with Intel Core i5-4210U -- I don't see that part number listed anywhere.

This is the list of the motherboards for models with touchscreens:

Touch screen models:
● Intel Celeron N2830 processor and UMA graphics 775396-xxx
● Intel Pentium N3540 processor and UMA graphics 788288-xxx
● Intel Core i3-4005U processor and UMA graphics 775395-xxx   You listed this one
● Intel Core i3-4030U processor and UMA graphics 779470-xxx
● Intel Core i3-4030U processor and 2 GB of discrete graphics 779471-xxx
● Intel Core i3-5005U processor and UMA graphics 790675-xxx
● Intel Core i3-5010U processor and UMA graphics 801860-xxx  You listed this one
● Intel Core i5-5200U processor and UMA graphics 790673-xxx
