In doing a HP Diagnostic "short drive self test", it cancels itself automatically at the 10% point. Won't complete the self test?

Yes the drive is having problems and they may not immediately show up as performance issues. You can try running a third party disk health diagnosis tool:

That should be considered the same as a failure.

Thank you Huffer for the reply.  So, what does that actually mean?  Is my hard drive bad?  Seems to be working normally.  Is it going bad?  Wish the diagnostic would give you a little more than just pass, fail, or cancelled.

Thanks Huffer!  I ran a self test using your link to DiscCheckup.  Ran it several times and it passed on each.  Does this mean the hard drive is ok?

Yes quite possibly. Just keep an eye on it. You might want to run a good old fashioned chkdsk on it to repair any file structure issues. These are software issues not hardware problems but can cause problems with hard drive testing.
