HP Envy 17 bw0000na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone!

My HP Envy 17 bw0000na came with a 1tb 2.5 hdd / 16GB Intel Optane m.2 combo. Having become accustomed to the speed and silence of an ssd, I swapped those for a 500gb 2.5 Samsung 860 Evo SATA ssd, and a 250gb WD Black nvme ssd in the m.2 slot.

Everything worked fine (clean install of Win 10 on the WD Black) but! That m.2 ssd was so bloody noisy !! High pitched piezoelectric chirps , screeches and grinding sounds. Certain usage setups eliminate the noise (relatively heavy use, but on a low power setting and running on battery seems to do it... but not always!) but it's persistent enough to be annoying. You could hear it under the fans, when they came on!

I migrated my os to the sata SSD, then removed the m.2, booted from the sata et voilà,no more noise. WD are happy for me to RMA for a refund. Their support team had a look at the diagnostic report generated by WD Dashboard and said it was either a defective drive, or just incompatible with this laptop.

So my question for you, dear community: Can anyone suggest an m.2 ssd that's proved to be compatible with an HP Envy 17 bw0000na, aaand that doesn't generate those awful screeches/chirps/etc? It would be a shame to let that m. 2 slot sit empty!

Many thanks in advance!

Many thanks!

Hi there, thank you for your reply!

Apologies, the specific drive is a WD Black WDS250G2X0C 250 GB.

I'll have a look at the list you've sent over. I'd really like to know if anyone else with this laptop has a noise free m.2 ssd - I appreciate that this is a pretty specific question !

Many thanks

Christopher

You are unlikely to get an answer to that specific question.  Frankly, I do not recall any other member reporting the issue that you did.

The WD Black SSD you used as an upgrade candidate did fulfill all of the required criteria.

https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/1167305/wd-black-nvme-ssd-sn700-250gb/specificaties/

That was probably a faulty M.2 SSD.

If the noises return when you replace it with a different M.2 SSD, it would indicate that there are component issues with the system board of your notebook.

I would have gone with a Samsung unit over a Western Digital M.2 SSD.

BTW.. Nice troubleshooting.

Your notebook is compatible with:

M.2 2280, peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) 3×4, non-volatile
memory express (NVMe) solid-state drive with triple-level cell (TLC)

All of the M.2 SSD products at the following web page are compatible and are the result of my setting the filters to the compatibility criterion provided in the Maintenence and Service guide for your notebook.

You did not provide the specific part number or model name of the SSD that you said gave you problems. That would help.

EDIT: This ssd appears on that list - it is indeed compatible, and worked fine. It's really just the noise issue !

Thank you for your help! Yeah, it was a little bit of a long shot

The stock Intel nvme optane unit didn't make any noise when in the m.2 slot so here's hoping its just that wd drive.

All the best!

Many thanks!
