HP Notebook - 14-am017tx

I currently only play light old games such as modded Half-Life, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Need For Speed: Carbon, and Race Driver: Grid. Despite the fact that my laptop is very much qualified, it always runs smoothly for few minutes before dropping significantly to just 10-20 FPS before returning to smooth performance, only to suddenly drop again and repeat the cycle. Does anyone know a solution? Note that I already upgraded all drivers (except for BIOS due to unstable neighborhood electricity which can brick the whole laptop if I were to try to update it) to the latest version and put all power settings to maximum performance (since the battery died years ago and is useless). Thanks.

Hi @Forfueor,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Sorry to hear about the issue. Without a BIOS update, you won’t be able to fully assess the performance. I also checked the system requirements for the games you mentioned, and they recommend:

  • Memory: 6GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB, AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB, or an equivalent DirectX 11 compatible GPU with 2GB of memory
  • DirectX: Version 11

However, I noticed that your PC currently has only 4GB of RAM and a lower-end GPU, which is likely why you're experiencing frame drops while playing. To improve performance, I’d recommend upgrading your RAM and updating the BIOS to see how much of a difference it makes.

Let me know how you’d like to proceed, and I’d be happy to guide you further!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi, actually they don't require that much of minimum performance and actually ran mediocrily in my older laptop (old low end Acer with only 512 VRAM, 4 GB RAM, HDD only and older i3 intel processor). But when I run them on this laptop with the same settings, it always goes up and down with the performance and it ticked me off since I always had to change response method to accomodate framerate.

Hi @Forfueor,

Thank you for reaching back, on a Pavilion pc for gaming, we would not have much support, however please try the setting from the  Windows settings: Go to Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings, then select the desired refresh rate from the dropdown menu; this is where you can control the maximum frame rate your PC can display on your monitor.

Do try and let me know if this helps

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Well... No not really, it's already at maximum. I've already set all of it for maximum power and updated all drivers (including BIOS) but it's still the same annoying stutters. Though I suspect it being either CPU & GPU Throttling or problems with HDD or even the RAM.

Hi @Forfueor,

Thank you for getting back, if you think there's a hardware issue with the PC, I would request you to please try running a hardware test on the device and let me know the result status

Hard Drive test

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.

3) Press F2 once.

4) Go to Component test.

5) From the list, run the Hard Drive (extensive) test.

Memory test

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.

3) Press F2 once.

4) Go to Component test.

5) From the list, run the Memory (extensive) test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
