Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. When you start cherry picking parts of quotes, half sentences it shows you are intellectually dangerous. See paragraph 4 of your post above. Slot has 2 chambers. B or B + M key (2 or 3 prongs) will fit. Only SATA (usually 3 prong) will work. Selective editing distorts the meaning and is dishonest. Basically you can only run an NVME in those HP laptops that have an M.2 slot and the Service Manual says an NVME will work and even then you can run into compatibility issues with specific NVME disks. Good luck to you.

prep 1 we should use the words drive(s) instead of disk(s) that are more related with the round magnetic disks in the mecanical HDD(s)
prep 2 pls!!! focus on 10,11,12 the rest i would rate as a sour and digress discusion of ours. I told u we should do this over some voip with better eficency and comunication.

so...
of of man

"Selective editing distorts the meaning and is dishonest" that is correct

!!! but u r the one doing it !!! here is the proof: in your original post you said "but some M.2 slots can support SATA B + M keyed disks only"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is FALSE because a B-keyed m.2 slot (or sata m.2 if u want to call it this way) will supports an B drive ALSO, not only B+M---and u even highlighted the world only !!!.

and in the post above u !!! selectively EDITED like: "Slot has 2 chambers. B or B + M key (2 or 3 prongs) will fit"--- this time i'm inclined to believe after u EDITED mostly by adding "B or" unlike the unedited version with "can support SATA B + M keyed disks only"=false

even your last edited version looks to me incomplete, because M only keyed disks will fit also in some (M-only) m.2 slots (but u can argue that this line is out of context, so feel free to ignore it)

10. a B keyed m.2 slot can handle sata AND pcie2x AND others but not pcie4x (drives can be B !!!or!!! B+M like u edited)

11. And here comes in question how the "slot is wired". personaly i don't exclude neither physical wiring that is permanet and neither "software wiring" via BIOS/UEFI that can be altered at any time by the manufacturer bia bios updates or by enthusiasts via bios mods

12. also re wireing some say that a slot can handle (12A) only one type others are saying that a slot can handle (12B) sata and pci2x "simultaniously"(=i mean unplung one type and seconds later plug the second type)

PLEASE answer me if u agree with 10,11,12 or if u think u have a better understanging pls spell it out (thanks)
also vital for this topic is how users can identify in befor bying if it is a mater of 12B or what type of 12A the slot can handle .

also re service manuals. looks like u are not aware of their limitations. on top of the many technical mistakes in them, they only present the combinations that hp has tested and has an interest to promote, but NOT all the possible combinations. i have successfuly done more than once thinks way outside of the service manuals. the above example with 6720s on steroids is one of them. Another is an upgrade to i7-4810mq (47w) of an (if i remember corect) hp 650 G-something where the service manual said that on that laptop u can put a bunch of i3s and i5s at 37w plus ONLY one i7-4700mq at 47w (It didn't mention 4810mq or i7-4600m/4610m@37w). Another example: lenovo g510 upgrade from i3-4000m to i7-4700mq. ps i can prove those (i'm still in contact with the buyers and i think i may convince them 2 give u proofs and like i said i can let u remore control the 6720s that i still own and use .

First to say thank you very much for all your valuable information... it was very helpful.  I have 2 questions which I hope were not answered already and I missed them.  First, the service manual shows up to 512GB and I was planning to purchase  the following 1TD drive ... WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6Gb/s M.2 2280 Solid State Drive - WDS100T2B0B"  would that be compatible?

Second, if I install the new SSD and clone the HDD, is it fairly straight forward to adjust the BIOS to boot off the new SSD.  Once done I would format the HDD and use it sparingly or not at all.

Laptop= 15-bs028ca

bios settings very easy : look for boot priority and hdd/ssd order or similar, also the manual should explain it clear

compatibility: most important: u selected m.2 SATA (not m.2 pcie) .It should work fine. other than a few exceptions like some weird bug/incompatibility and if HP has a dodgy strategy to favor just some models/manufactures (so they can charge more)  and this can be done via bios limitations ... but .i'm 99.99% sure is ok
