Pavilion x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey there,

I'd like to upgrade my RAM but according to my laptop's documentation, I'll need to replace the entire RAM chip since it doesn't have a 2nd slot for another chip. It's specifications states as:
Memory, standard - "8 GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)"

My question is, do I need to buy a 16GB RAM chip that's compatible with the laptop or would any 16GB DDR3 chip work? If there is an added slot for another 8GB chip that can work as well, I just didn't see it documented so I'm unsure.

Laptop: Pavilion x360 bk020wm
OS: WIndows 10 x64 1809

Thanks.

HP is usually rather conservative with memory spec-speculation is that it is only what HP offers in the specific model. Many HP owners have reported upgrades to 16gb of memory  and even 32GB of memory on models that state  support for 16GB. The non-accessible goes back to the near complete dis-assembly I mentioned. If you look at the top of the manual it also says "For Authorized Service Providers" . HP does not encourage owners doing their own upgrades. Of course many do it anyway- especially if their laptop is beyond warranty period.

According to the Maintenance and Service Guide it has two slots. However it requires a lot of dis-assembly to access them.

Usually I depend on crucial.com for compatible memory. You can even use their Scanner tool to determine what you have and what is compatible.

Thank you for the information, didn't check out the maintenance and service guide at first. The disassembly process won't be a problem for me.
Will take a look at crucial.com when I'm ready to buy more RAM.

Edit: So apparently this is what the maintenance and service guide says:
"Two SODIMM slots, nonaccessible/non-upgradeable Support for DDR3L-1600 dual channel
  Support for up to 8-GB maximum system memory in the following conigurations ● 8192-MB: (8192-MB × 1) ● 6144-MB: (4096-MB + 2048-MB) ● 4096-MB: (4096-MB × 1)"

The bolded text concerns me, does this mean that I can only upgrade my RAM to 8GB, and not 16? It also says "nonaccessible/non-upgradeable Support for DDR3L-1600".

Understood, I was planning to carry it by an authorized seller to change anyway, I don't feel comfortable dealing with hardware myself. Thanks for the information!
