I am getting conflicting information on whether or not I can upgrade my Envy Laptop. The product ID is169w5av. It currently has 16GB. I'm assuming it is 2x8. I don't want to disassemble and/or order until I'm sure.

The 'nonupgradeable, onboard system memory' spec is incorrect based on the info I provided earlier.

Also if you look at chapter 3 of manual, none of the motherboard part numbers indicate they come with onboard system memory.

Sometimes the service manuals are incorrect or contradictory.

I have a 15-ee0047nr notebook that uses the service manual at the link below, and it provides basically the same contradictory info as the one for your model...onboard system memory in chapter 1 and then in chapter 5, a procedure to remove and replace the memory.

The 15-ee0000 service manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB, but this person installed 2 x 16 GB of memory which worked fine.

if you want to see if your notebook can support more than 2 x 8 GB of memory (which it should), you can run this command in Windows Powershell as administrator:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_PhysicalMemoryArray | Select-Object MaxCapacityEx, MemoryDevices

The parts list indicates that your PC comes with removable memory or the part numbers and descriptions would not be listed.

HP PartSurfer

Also the motherboard does not indicate that it comes with onboard memory.

Below is the link to the service manual:

The memory is under a metal shield.

I looked at that manual earlier which is one reason I'm confused. It says non-upgradeable configuration. Also, does this mean the 16GB configuration is the max?

Thank you so much for your expert help. Apparently it can handle 128GB. I have upgraded laptop memory before so I think I got this. Thanks again!

You're very welcome.

IMHO, you should be fine with 2 x 16 GB of memory in your notebook.

The cost of memory is sky high right now due to the huge demand for memory chips for AI.

Same for SSD's.

Any device that uses memory has doubled in cost over the past year.
