Is it safe to continue using a laptop with a swollen battery?

No, it is not safe.

The data from HP indicates the battery will not explode.

That said, the swelling can damage other components in the computer, including the touchpad, keyboard, and even the hinge assembly.  Why?  There is simply not room in the case to accommodate a battery in this condition.

"Fat" Battery / Bloated Battery / Swollen Battery – Sealed / Internal Battery

• Swollen battery might be hiding OR there might be evidence that the battery has inflated.  For example, notebook case is warped, touchpad stops working, “odd” bulging near the keyboard.

• If the battery is in a swollen or bloated condition, the battery must be removed from the computer and replaced.  There are no other remedies, tests, or useful options.

My system is on extended warranty , and so is covered , other than the 2 weeks it will be offsite and HP do not guarantee that they will not wipe the system in the process of repair. Of course that will result in several days work in rebuilding the system and transferring the licenses

They state that it is safe. 

On this basis I'm intending to continue to use the system until I replace it in maybe 18 months time, when I can transfer my operation to a new laptop and allow this one to be repaired and potentially wiped

If Notebook battery becomes somewhat deformed or swollen; In some cases, the battery swelling may be significant enough to impact other components of the system including the touchpad, keyboard, chassis and it may crack open the laptop casing.

A swollen battery does not present a safety issue. HP has worked closely with our battery cell suppliers and third-party industry experts to help minimize the potential for HP batteries to swell over time and to identify that swollen batteries are not a safety issue.

HP recommends that customers experiencing battery swelling discontinue use of the notebook until the battery can be replaced. Customers should contact HP to understand what battery replacement options are available.

If a battery is under warranty, HP will replace the battery per the terms and conditions of the HP Worldwide Limited Warranty or applicable HP Care Packs.

For batteries no longer under warranty, contact HP to purchase a genuine HP replacement battery.
