I read somewhere that a successful BIOS update requires a stable internet connection. Is it true?

No....you can do a BIOS update from a preboot environment without the OS even activated so no internet connection needed. An internet connection during BIOS update would also generally not save your bacon if something goes wrong because the update is being done from a local file. You do need internet if you do the upgrade from within Windows (most common way) however to access the HP server and download the BIOS update file. After its downloaded and the upgrade starts and particularly on reboot (which is the critical part of the process) your computer is not connected to the internet. You do need to have a fully charged battery and have the AC adapter connected.
