Is the lenovo thinkpad hybrid usb-c with usb-a docking station (40AF0135US) compatible with my HP Envy 15t-as100 CTO? I am having a very difficult time finding the right docking station for this laptop. All the articles I have read have not helped me thus far, so hoping this community can help me. Thanks for any help.

I use that exact dock with an even older HP laptop and it works great. However, the laptop I have has a USB-C port that is Thunderbolt, which allows all the ports on the dock to work, particularly the video. In your case you have a USB-C port that is data only so the USB ports on the dock will work and the ethernet but not the video which you likely want. You need to get a USB-C dock that has "DisplayLink" features. There are a number of them sold on amazon.com. They tend to be a little expensive (the Lenovo one is pretty expensive, too). Let me know if you want a specific recommendation and link.

Also, I can't even get the docking station to be recognized by my laptop. I swapped out the USB-C cable for a USB-A cable and tried it that way, but still nothing. I am assuming it just doesn't work with the Envy. Also, the docking station has display link capability written on the lenovo docking station.

Are you powering up the dock? Mine has an AC adapter that goes to the dock. In fact mine has a pair of adapters and needs a huge power brick and then another smaller power brick to work right. It's a fantastic dock if you can get it to work. You also have to connect via the USB-C port on the back of the dock and not the one on the front and I do not believe you can connect the dock to the computer using any of the USB-A ports on the dock. If you get it connected and the dock is DisplayLink then I am going to alter my answer and say it should work. I have only used my dock with a Lenovo and HP laptop that are Thunderbolt type USB-C.
