So as far as I know, my motherboard's model is Hewlett-Packard 1984. I want to know:
1. how much ram can my system support?
2. what speeds of ram can my system support?
My CPU is AMD A8 5550m

No, HP won't supply motherboard information for notebooks. Nowadays, we use System boards which have few parts such as CPU, video, OS and even RAM on same one piece of hardware with a part #
What is your Pavilion 17 machine ? There are hundreds of models/products around. Please use the following way to find out the model/product of your machine - we probably can find part # for you:

Please do NOT post its Serial number (s/n).
Regards.

actually it's fine. Used Crucial's tool and just bought a compatible stick of ram according to them.
However, I do have a question. So my motherboard bios is from 2013, is there a way to check if my motherboard has a newer bios?
