Product Name: HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC

Product Number: B1W89EA#ABU

Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit

I have made no recent changes.

Problem:

Whilst typing the caret keeps jumping up the screen so that the text I am in the middle of typing ends up disappearing to some random position higher up the page, in the middle of text I have already typed.

For a few weeks, I have assumed this was just me slipping, as I have only just started using the ctrl + arrow keys to move through the text easier. However, I am now becoming very sure that this isn't the case because it happens mid-flow in completely normal typing (i.e. not involving the arrow keys at all!).

I only got this laptop last summer, but I'm a uni finalist and REALLY rely on my laptop. I type a lot, and this is really annoying and inconvenient 😞

Hello NerdWhale.  I understand you're having trouble with your keyboard.

You should try removing the keyboard's driver and hard resetting the notebook.  This will force the hardware to be reinitialized.  Try the following.

  1. Click Start, type "Device Manager," and press Enter.
  2. Expand the Keyboards section.
  3. Right click on each device and select Uninstall.
  4. Shut down the notebook.
  5. Remove the battery and AC power.
  6. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds three times.
  7. Replace the battery and AC power.
  8. Boot the notebook and allow Windows to reinstall the drivers.
  9. Verify whether the problem is resolved and post the result.

I'll keep an eye out for your reply.  Have a great day!

I fixed this problem with available solution about 2 or 3 years ago but it's now back with a vengence. I tried to fix problem again using original fix but it's not working out for me.. Anybody out there know how to fix problem

HP Recommended

Yeah - the problem has recently returned on mine as well 😞

I've ignored it for quite a while because it's my final year at uni so I need my laptop all the time, and didn't want to accidentally kill it. But this is less than a year old and it's driving me crazy. What should I do now?!

Hello NerdWhale,

I understand you are stating the cursor keeps jumping while you are typing, is that correct? I will attempt  to help you resolve this issue.

Does this issue seem to only occur in one program or multiple programs?

Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

Thanks

Yep, that's correct.

It occurs in multiple programmes. Mostly MS Word because that's what I use the most, but it's also done it on Mozilla Thunderbird and I think whilst typing on Google Chrome. Basically any time I have to type for extended periods, it will eventually start jumping around. It only seems to jump upwards!

NerdWhale,

Thank you for that information.

By chance do you have a wired or wireless keyboard that you can hook up to your laptop to test? Just to see if the same thing occurs with a different piece of equipment.

Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

Thanks

This problem appears to be present with all programs when I enter data. It happens especially when the pointer is in the field that you're typing data. It happened several times while I was typing this note. Problem is back with a vengence.

I think it might have something to do with the proximity of the mouse pad. I think if your hand brushes up against it while typing then the cursor tends to jump backward in the text. I got bye without it jumping by carefully keeping my hands up and away from mouse pad.
