Common problems for Battery

I am a Bangladeshi user and I purchased an HP Pavilion dv2053tu laptop from India. Recently, I have been experiencing issues with the spacebar key. Initially, the key would sometimes work if I pushed it to one side, but over time the issue got worse — at one point, the key started triggering on its own, and now it has completely stopped working.

Unfortunately, this particular model is not available through HP Bangladesh, and I am unable to find a compatible replacement keyboard easily. I would like to know the following:

  1. Is there any permanent solution to this kind of keyboard issue?

  2. Can I replace the keyboard with one from another 14-inch HP Pavilion model?

  3. I might be able to find a keyboard from the HP Pavilion dv1234tu model locally — would it be compatible with the dv2053tu?

@CaptainLevi, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Let’s go through your situation carefully.

First, about the keyboard issue:

  • When a key starts acting weird (responding only when pressed from a side, phantom presses, finally dead), it almost always means hardware failure — usually the key switch or keyboard membrane is damaged.
  • There's no permanent repair for that key specifically. You could try a deep cleaning or a DIY fix (e.g., inserting small plastic shims or conductive paint), but honestly, these are all very temporary and unreliable. Replacement is the real fix.

Now about replacement and compatibility:

  • HP Pavilion dv2053tu belongs to the dv2000 series (Intel platform).
  • The dv1234tu also belongs to the dv1000 series, which is a slightly older series (earlier dv1000 design).

Unfortunately, the dv1234tu keyboard is not directly compatible with the dv2053tu.

The keyboard layout may look similar (size, key positions), but:

  • The connector (ribbon cable) is usually different (size, number of pins, position).
  • Screw mounts (how the keyboard is secured) can be different.
  • Motherboard socket type can differ slightly even between closely related models.

Thus, even if you manage to physically fit it, the connector mismatch will likely make it unusable.

We suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.

This is a very old computer. HP Service Center is very unlikely to have access to parts. Fortunately, on these older models the keyboard is very easy to remove and replace and you should have no trouble finding a compatible keyboard in the used market like eBay or amazon, probably fairly cheap.

See pages 17 and 54 for a list of keyboard part numbers and removal instructions:
