Hello All, I own HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15 purchased in Dec 2019 and now I am suddenly facing below 2 issues:
1. The laptop no more turns ON or remains ON without constant power plugged in. How can I know whether the battery is dead or is it a driver issue? If driver issue, how can I troubleshoot and find it for my self? If battery, where can I find a replacement?
2. Only certain section of the keyboard is acting weird like keys around letter P. Sometimes they work, sometimes they won't. Its crazy! Doesn't look like there is a hardware problem.

@AM1092, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on your situation with the HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15 (Dec 2019) running Windows 11, here’s how to diagnose and address both issues:
Battery Issue – Laptop only works when plugged in
Determine if it's a dead battery or driver issue:
Step 1: Basic Battery Health Check
- Plug in the charger and power on the laptop.
- Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (built-in):
- Press Esc repeatedly after turning it on, then press F2 for diagnostics.
- Choose Component Tests > Power > Battery.
- Run the Battery Check and note the result (e.g., “Replace”, “Calibrate”, “Passed”).
Step 2: Use HP Support Assistant
- If Windows boots, open HP Support Assistant and go to Battery Health Check under "Battery" section.
- It will report battery condition (Good / Weak / Replace).
Step 3: Check with Windows
- Open Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /batteryreport - This generates a battery report in C:\Users\<YourUsername>\battery-report.html.
- Look for Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity and recent usage stats.
If it's a driver or firmware issue:
- Open Device Manager > Batteries and uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
- Restart the laptop; Windows will reinstall it automatically.
- Also check for BIOS/firmware updates on HP Support Site.
If battery is faulty (likely, after 4–5 years):
Replacement battery part number (check inside battery diagnostics).
Purchase options:
HP Parts Store: click here
Or Authorized service center - HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
Keyboard Issue – Some keys (like around 'P') not working properly
Troubleshooting steps:
Step 1: Rule out software issues
Boot into Safe Mode:
- Press Shift while clicking Restart.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart > F4 (Safe Mode).
- Test the keys in Notepad. If they misbehave here too, likely hardware issue.
Step 2: Use On-Screen Keyboard
- Press Win + Ctrl + O to bring it up.
- Compare input behavior to determine if it's hardware-related.
Step 3: Test with HP Hardware Diagnostics (keyboard test)
- Same as battery check: Esc > F2 > Component Tests > Input Devices > Keyboard.
- Follow on-screen instructions to press keys — it will show which keys are registered.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
