My laptop keyboard started acting up sometime in the middle of last year. The 5 key (top row) seems to have been 'possessed' by some software. When in text mode, the number will keep typing by itself (Example: 555555555555555) until I hit Backspace or Esc. After a while it starts again.
When the laptop boots up and I bring up the Windows login screen, it will also start typing 5 repeatedly and I see the password dots filling up the box.
Recently the problem went away for a few days. The 5 key works when I pressed it and no more repeating numbers. Then the problem recurs. So I know it's not a 'key getting stuck with debris' issue. It's something related to the software. Please advise.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, there seems to be an issue with the keyboard.
Don't worry, I'm here to help! To better assist you - May I have the exact model name of the computer? Refer to this link for steps to find the product details. (Ensure not to share the serial number, email, phone number, etc.)
While you respond to that, let's try these steps -
First of all, check if the key is stuck. Refer to this video link for steps - How to Fix Stuck Keys on HP Notebooks?
If the key is not stuck, test the hardware -
1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) Go to Component test.
5) From the list, run the Keyboard test.
If the result of the test comes as "Pass", try re-installing the keyboard driver -
1) In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
2) Double-click Keyboards.
3) Right click on the keyboard drivers and click on uninstall.
4) Restart the computer.
