AY542TU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

Im facing an issue with my HP AY542TU keyboard. The Shift Key is jammed like hell. When i boot up the windows and the password promptcomes i cant type using my keyboard. But i had found a temporary solution for this issue (Opening the onsceen keyboard and clicking the ctrl key 3 times (off on off) will temporarily allow me to type the password. But while using this method i cant use the fuction keys such as brightness and sound adjustments etc..

I dont know what causes it but its realy frustrating. I cant even use an external keyboard.

I had tried to purchase a new keyboard from online but i cant find in HP store. Please suggest me an online site for keyboard replacement part. Its better to have a backlit keboard if available. or is there any DIY ideas to fix this issue easily?? please suggest

Hey there! @Vishnu_AGz

Have you tried checking with an external keyboard does the issue persist?

Was there any liquid split on the Notebook Keyboard?

Is there any Dust settled on the Notebook Keyboard?

Try updating the BIOS on the PC to the latest version and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link. Click Here

Also, restart your PC keep tapping the F11 key on your PC before the PC boots, you will see the recovery manager screen.

Open the command prompt from the list and check if all the keys on your PC are functioning correctly.

Try few steps recommended below.

Turn off the computer and then restart it.
Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if a startup menu opens.
If a setup menu does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working. The integrated keyboard in the notebook should be serviced or replaced. To continue using the notebook, connect a USB-wired keyboard to a USB port and restart the computer.
If a setup menu opens, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. If these keys are working in the startup menu, but then fail when Windows loads, the problems might be related to the keyboard software.
Restart the computer.
In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.
Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.
Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.
Restart the notebook. Right-click Start (), select Shut down or sign out, then select Restart.
Wait for the computer to restart and open Windows.

Turn off the Sticky Keys feature on your Windows.

The Sticky Keys feature, besides, Toggle Keys and Filter Keys, make your keyboard easier to type. However, sometimes they make trouble. Your Shift key stops working is the one. So make sure these features are not turned on.

Follow these:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and I (at the same time) to invoke the Settings window.

2) Click Ease of Access.
3) Select Keyboard on the left pane. Then make sure the status of Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys and Filter Keys are all set to Off. If there is anyone set to On, switch it to Off instead.
4) Press the Shift key on your keyboard to see if it work.

Lastly, if the issue still persists after trying out the steps. Replace the laptop keyboard with the following part number below.
