This from an Apple website. I am not making this stuff up:

What about washing hands?

Even though keeping your hand clean is a good idea, especially if you have obvious grime on them, the problem may simply be unavoidable. The issue here is essentially corrosion of the key’s plastic, which seems to happen most from the oils on one’s skin. Therefore unless you wear gloves, or meticulously wash your hands, if your oils corrode the keys, then you are going to see them fade faster than others. The cause for this may be from stress, gender, genetics, or anything, but there overall seems to be no rhyme to why it happens. In some cases keys may fade exceptionally fast, while for other people the original key texture may be preserved for months and even years.

Even the mighty Mac with its expensive hardware has not found a way to stop this. Yes your hands produce sweat and oils and the Ph and contents of them varies a lot from person to person and even day to day. Auto makers also have not figured out a way to make a tire that does not wear and I guess we can fault them for blaming the toxic roads.

Some suggest custom cutting a small piece of thick tape over each key. Enough. Good luck.

I've had that happen 3X and I'm just about done w/HP.  I found stickers on Amazon that are wonderful.  You just stik them on to the keys and they look better than the original printing.  The also have a little traction so typing is better.  There are several brands on the net.  The brand I use is called "Casebuy" and they give you two sets for a little over six dollars.  Good luck!
