I had to replace the keyboard/Palm rest on my laptop because the hinge bosses broke. The hinges were very stiff. I opted to replace it with a backlit unit. After swapping all the innards and booting the computer I found that everything works except the touchpad and mouse buttons. The mouse button circuit board came from my old unit but the touchpad was already on the new one. Device manager shows the I2C HID device reports an error 10. (Device can not start)
I tried :
Uninstalling the device and rebooting. Same results.
Updating driver. Windows reports I already have the best/most recent driver.
Reconnecting the ribbons to the circuit boards. No change.
The only difference I see is the touchpad QR code sticker. My old one shows SB550A-73H1 and the replacement shows SB550A-73H0. The place I purchased the keyboard from says that the problem is my old one is a revision and suggests I swap the touchpads. Is that possible? They look like they are held in place by flattened/melted pins that are part of the palm rest and not replaceable. Also, if the circuit board is possibly held in with any type of adhesive, will it affect the function of the touchpad if I attempt to remove and replace it?

Thanks for responding but, unfortunately, my notebook's warranty expired last July . My only alternative is paying for tech support but I'm not sure they would know if the touch pad circuit board can safely be removed and relocated to a different palmrest assembly without damaging it. The automated support bot suggested I seek help from the HP Community board. However upon doing some more research I have found that I am "blessed" with a PTP touch pad. So the one in the replacement I purchased is probably functioning, but not with my motherboard. There are a few PTP replacement palmrests available but not many of the sellers seem to know the difference. With the variety of colors and optional hardware available on these machines locating one for my two year old computer has become a nightmare.

Thank you! The link will be an immense help if I need future parts. (But I did not find a PTP circuit board in the parts list) When I was searching HP's web site for information, the parts I needed were listed as "Not available" to anyone except authorized repair facilities. Do they think I'm just renting this computer? With parts I could find I kept my HP DV6 laptop going for eleven years. This 17BY is perfect for what I need so I intend to keep it going as long as I can. I am a little alarmed that in two years' time the hinges became stiff enough to break the screw bosses. The only way to repair it is to replace the broken plastic. But most sellers want your model number and then grab a box off the shelf. Not knowing about the two different touchpads various configurations of hardware, you are left to their mercy. Being able to give them a part number will be a tremendous advantage.
