Hello, I have an OMEN gaming laptop that recently stopped turning on. When I plug it in I can see the orange charging light, but no matter how long I hold the power button down for it won't turn on. I tried taking it to a local computer repair shop, but they couldn't fix it or do a successful hard reset or anything. Trying to figure out where to go from here, any advice is appreciated.

Hi @OmenOReilly
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I’m sorry you’re facing this situation—it’s discouraging when the laptop shows a charging light but refuses to power on.
You’ve already tried a hard reset and even sought help locally, so let’s go step by step to give the system the best chance to wake up.
Step 1: Perform a full power reset
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
- Reconnect the AC adapter directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
- Try powering on again.
Step 2: Check for signs of life
- Watch for keyboard backlight, fan spin, or screen flicker when pressing the power button.
- If none appear, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Try a forced BIOS recovery
Some OMEN models respond to a key combination:
- With the laptop powered off and AC connected, press and hold Windows + B.
- While holding, press the power button for 2–3 seconds, then release all keys.
- Wait up to 30 seconds to see if the BIOS recovery screen appears.
Step 4: Test with external display
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C.
- Power on the laptop and check for any signal.
- If the external display shows activity, the issue may be with the internal panel.
Step 5: Remove non-essential peripherals
- Disconnect all USB devices, SD cards, and external drives.
- Try powering on with only the AC adapter connected.
Step 6: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (if accessible)
- Power off the laptop.
- Press Esc repeatedly at startup, then press F2.
- If the diagnostics menu appears, run “System Tests > Extensive Test.”

HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures
Why this helps
- The power reset clears residual charge.
- The BIOS recovery forces initialization if firmware is stuck.
- External display testing rules out a panel issue.
- Diagnostics confirm whether hardware is responding at all.
If the laptop remains completely unresponsive after these steps, it points to a deeper hardware fault such as the system board or power circuitry. But if you see even a flicker or hear fans, that’s a sign the recovery steps are working.
