HP notebook 4gb ram
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop is an Intel Pentium with 4gb ram, windows 10 home. I've had it for two years. I had an issue with the battery where it said '75%, not charging' and I replaced the battery with a new one and it was working fine until now. A few days ago, it showed the error '96%, not charging'. I tried uninstalling the battery at device manager and tried calibrating it also. I found out that if I let the battery go until 95% and then charge it, the laptop charges till 100% but if I try to charge it when the battery is more than 95%, then the error pops up and the laptop doesn't charge. Ive also done pressing the power buttom for a minute and all. Why does this happen?

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.

I have gone through your Post and I'll be glad to assist

I see that you have already calibrated the battery and also reinstalled the battery.

I suggest you download the BIOS from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers and then uninstall the battery from device manager again

Step 01. Click on the Start Button
Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: This Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again
Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook
Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter
Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter
Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

If the issue persists, please run the Battery Test from  F2 Diagnostic to confirm the Hardware functionality

- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
- When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the main menu, click Component Tests and Power > Battery

Keep me posted how it goes 👍

Thank you and have a great day 😊

Some laptops can be configured to not charge to 100%. This is typical. 95-100% battery life is considered a full charge. Something to do with making the battery last longer.

Also, Laptop battery contain cells, typically six. Each cell hold a certain amount of charge. Together they provide correct voltage and amperage for pc. Some cells “weaken” over time and take longer to charge. The charging circuit stops the process when the strongest cell reaches capacity. This is why you see a non 100 percent yet it says fully charged. Sometimes you can remedy this by completely draining battery and charging

Note: Intel-based computers may stop charging between 93 and 99 percent.

Resolution

This is normal. The batteries used in these computers are designed to avoid short discharge/charge cycles in order to prolong the overall life of the battery.

To allow the adapter to recharge the battery to 100%, simply allow the charge to drop below 93%. The adapter will automatically recharge the battery to 100%.
