Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help here.
I have had my laptop just over a year and recently started experiencing an issue where the device randomly cuts off without warning, then restarts. The screen literally goes black and the machine reboots.
There is no message to say "restarting in x minutes - postpone" or similar, and it doesn't restart like it would if you were to restart it or if it was automatically restarting after an update - it just cuts off like the power switch has been pressed, then reboots by itself.
Extremely frustrating, especially when I am in a video conference call for work and the laptop goes dead.
Anyone got any ideas?
WIndows 10
AMD A10
8GB RAM
2TB HDD
Works fine otherwise.
Thanks!

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand the computer restarts unexpectedly,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Have you attempted to update the BIOS? (Click here to find and install it, if you haven't done it yet)
Did you check with an alternate power adapter or battery to check if that works fine?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:
If Windows suddenly restarts without warning, or restarts when you try to shut it down, it might be caused by one of several issues. Windows could be set to restart automatically when certain system errors occur. A BIOS update can also resolve the issue. Use the information in this document to resolve issues with the computer restarting unexpectedly.
If the computer restarts unexpectedly and then does not start to Windows, see one of the following documents for steps to resolve this issue:
-
HP Guided Solution - No Power or No Boot Troubleshooting for notebook or desktop computers.
-
Computer Does Not Start (Windows 😎 for notebook computers.
In addition to the steps in this article, updating video card drivers is known to resolve many of the problems that can cause the computer to restart.
Windows restarts for no apparent reason
Follow the steps in this section, in order, until the problem is resolved.
Step 1: Disabling the automatic restart option to view error messages
Many hardware driver or operating system errors will cause the computer to display a specific error message before stopping the operation or shutting down the computer. However, if the Automatically restart option is enabled, an error message might not be displayed despite an error taking place. Disable this option to allow the computer to display the error message.
Follow these steps to disable the Automatically restart option:
-
In Windows, search for and open View advanced system settings.
-
Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.
CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.
(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)
Keep me posted,
If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I have updated the BIOS to the latest image, as per your advice. I had to do it via USB drive image as the Insyde Flash (whatever that is) wouldn't work properly to let me do it directly via the BIOS update utility.
Anyway, the BIOS update has been successful, but it is too early to say whether or not the problem has been fixed. I will have to wait and see if the problem occurs again.
Thanks again for your help - I will be back in touch in due course.
Tom.
