Hp Envy 360x

Hi, I have an Envy 360x that is about 4 years old. I am getting the error message that a cooling fan is not working properly. I opened it up and dusted to see if that would help and it did not. The laptop is extremely sluggish.

I have a few questions:

1) does a malfunctioning fan cause the sluggishness, or are these issues unrelated?

2) since the laptop is 4 years old, and my local repair shop charges about $120 to fix this type of issue (I looked and I am not comfortable trying to do it myself) is it best to put that money towards a new laptop instead? I feel like a repair would help me limp along for another year or two but would just delay the inevitable.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you!

It is not hot. The fan makes noise, but is inconsistent. (Not always loud - just sometimes sounds labored and other times no noise.)

I do get the cooling fan is not operating correctly error message on startup (I believe it is message 90B).
