Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-s0000 (76T54AV)

Hello, yesterday I noticed my laptop was not charging even though it was plugged in. I tried plugging the power cord elsewhere, still not charging; so I looked it up and thanks to posts already present on the HP forum I identified the problem: the computer charges only when powered off. I followed the instructions I found: hard reset, installing HP support assistant and using the app's troubleshooting. It found the problem and temporarily solved it. But this happened again today, and now HP support assistant doesn't see anything wrong and says the AC connector isn't plugged in (although it stills charges when the laptop is off). I installed HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI and after a few rounds of plugging/unplugging the AC I got the following failure ID: RLGCG1-C23CLW-XD7WXG-C1D303. What could the issue be? Windows and all my drivers are up to date and I haven't installed anything particular recently besides the HP software mentioned (after the problem occurred).

Step 1: Check the Power Adapter & Battery

  • Ensure you're using the original HP power adapter.
  • Try a different power outlet or a compatible charger.
  • If possible, remove the battery (if removable) and test if the laptop runs on AC power alone.

 

Step 2: Update BIOS & Power Management Drivers

  • Visit HP’s support page and download the latest BIOS, chipset, and battery drivers.
  • Install them and restart your laptop.

 

Step 3: Perform a Power Reset

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Hold the power button for 30-40 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger (without battery) and turn it on to see if it charges.

 

Step 4: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and repeatedly press F2 to enter HP Diagnostics.
  • Run the Battery Test to check its health.

 

Step 5: Check for Charging Circuit Issues

  • If the issue persists, it could be a charging circuit problem on the motherboard.
  • You may need to consult an HP-authorized repair center for further diagnostics.

Hi, thank you for your answer.

I am already using the original adapter. The adapter itself works fine when the laptop is off, or when the battery is not disconnected from the motherboard (right now I am using the laptop without the battery, it powers on without problem when it is on AC only). BIOS and drivers are up to date. I already tried a power reset without success. HP hardware diagnostics say the battery is working fine but doesn't detect that the adapter is plugged in. I also already tried uninstalling the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" driver and letting it reinstall, as recommended to another user with a similar issue. I ran battery tests in: HP Support Assistant, HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows, HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. The UEFI diagnostics raised an error in the power suite test after not detecting the adapter. No battery fault found.

Is there anything else I can do before bringing the laptop to a repair center?

Since the battery itself is detected as functional but the adapter isn’t recognized when the laptop is powered on, here are a few more things to try before heading to a repair center:

 

1. Check the Charging Port & Power Jack

  • Inspect the charging port for dust, debris, or bent pins.
  • If possible, try wiggling the adapter plug gently while connected—if the charging light flickers, the DC power jack may be loose or damaged.

 

2. Test with Another Compatible Adapter

  • Even though your original adapter works when the laptop is off, it’s worth testing with another HP-certified adapter to rule out voltage inconsistencies.

 

3. Reset the BIOS to Default Settings

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS (F10 on HP laptops).
  • Navigate to Reset to Default Settings and confirm.
  • Save changes and restart.

 

4. Run a Battery Calibration

  • Fully charge the battery (if possible), then let it drain completely.
  • Recharge it to 100% without interruption.
  • This can help recalibrate the battery’s communication with the system.
