Hello

I got this laptop second hand as a birthday present. Little did I know, I had been using the wrong  AC adapter for it and the battery had been worn out. It was a 3.33a when the laptop needed 7.7a. I didn't know this at the time. It was charging while on normally on the 3.33a AC adapter until one day it had just shut off while on AC power. I figured I needed a new battery and that's when I found out the issue with the AC adapter. I got a new battery, installed it myself with a replacement I got on Amazon since the warranty was up and there isn't an HP centre near where I live. Also, HP doesn't sell batteries for this model anymore. I let it charge for about 24 hours on the 3.33a charger to let the battery calibrate. I did this on that AC Adapter because at this stage I hadn't got the new one yet and assumed it was fine because it worked before. I turned it on to let it drain, charged it while off again to 100% and then turned it on to notice it wasn't charging while plugged in. I tried everything I found from this forum and the Microsoft forum to fix it and couldn't find a solution. And when I say everything, I mean you'd have to ask me to try something very different from what's on here to fix this. I even got a suitable charger this time around. I realized, however, that I can run the computer on AC power If I disable the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery driver. Once I enable this, it detects the battery is at 0% and shuts the laptop off. Do you know any possible ways to fix this that doesn't involve me getting a new laptop?

To get the answer to this question, Yes It is normal for a battery to drain even when it is not in use, and a battery's ability to hold a charge decreases over time.

To help maintain battery capacity, HP batteries are designed to discharge a small amount once fully charged. This is normal for most notebook batteries. The battery will begin to recharge once the charge has dropped below 95%.

The performance and capacity of laptop batteries naturally decrease over time. The way a battery is used on a daily basis can also affect these attributes.

Many factors can contribute to battery performance:

  • Battery cells suffer gradual, irreversible capacity loss with each discharge-charge cycle.

  • Temperature and discharge loads can impact battery performance and capacity.

  • Battery capacity can decrease even when the computer is unplugged from a power source and not in use.

  • During prolonged storage or non-use, the battery charge can decrease below its recommended low-voltage level. Discharging the battery below its recommended low-voltage level may physically damage the battery and result in the battery becoming unusable.

Note: If the battery does not recover after charging for 30 - 60 minutes, the battery has most likely sustained physical damage and must be replaced.
  • Leaving the battery at a high level of charge in a high-temperature environment for extended periods can accelerate the loss of performance and capacity.

  • To help maintain battery capacity, HP batteries are designed to discharge a small amount once fully charged. This is normal for most notebook batteries. The battery will begin to recharge once the charge has dropped below 95%.

  • Using software for graphics processing or high-definition video accelerates the loss of performance and capacity. For example, playing 3D games decreases capacity faster than using word processing applications.

  • Your notebook configuration and power settings can impact your battery performance. This includes settings such as:

    • Display brightness

    • Backlit keyboard

    • Display resolution

    • Windows Power Plan

    • Processor speed

    • Type of storage, such as a peripheral storage

Thank you for your response. Sadly, this doesn't answer my question

My laptop only charges when it's off. The only way I can use it when the battery is low is to have it hooked up on power with the ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery disabled. Then it works until the AC adapter is disconnected. Then, it just shuts off until either it's fully charged or I plug the AC adapter in and let it charge to an amount where it can be turned on and the ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver is disabled again

This still does not help

@6evinlukw,

You have done the basic troubleshooting as per the document and the notebook needs to check to get to know its hardware is faulty, not a software issue.

I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer or HP Chat Support Team.
