My HP Envy laptop's touchpad began peeling off. Actually it is the smooth coating on the touchpad. It did not receive any physical or chemical harm, just regular day to day personal usage. Considering the touchpad and keyboard are totally functioning, I don't want to replace it. Is there a way to clean the coating or just replace the touchpad surface?

Hi @Ali4691,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand that the smooth coating on your HP Envy laptop’s touchpad has started peeling off, even though the touchpad and keyboard still function properly. I’ll be glad to help explain your options and next steps.
About the touchpad surface coating
The coating on HP touchpads is a protective finish applied during manufacturing to ensure a smooth and responsive surface. Over time, natural wear, hand oils, or environmental conditions can cause the coating to peel or fade, even with regular use.
Unfortunately, this coating cannot be repaired or cleaned back to its original finish once it starts peeling. Using solvents, alcohol, or abrasives may further damage the surface or affect touch sensitivity.
Recommended next steps
- Do not attempt to remove the remaining coating this can impact the touch sensor beneath.
- Gently clean the touchpad with a soft microfiber cloth slightly dampened with clean water (no chemicals).
- If the peeling affects usability or comfort, HP recommends replacing the touchpad surface assembly. The touchpad surface is part of the top cover/palmrest assembly, which can be replaced by an HP Authorized Service Provider.
⚙️ HP does not supply or support only the surface film separately the entire touchpad assembly is replaced as one unit.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
