Sometimes my left and right buttons below the touchpad just don't work at all.

It seems to be working fine now. I just did a partial disassembly and replaced the part with one I bought on ebay.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Let's try cleaning the touchpad area: Use a clean, damp cloth to remove any dirt, grime on the mouse pad.
If its a software driver issue click here to update the touchpad drivers.

thanks for the help. I tried cleaning the area but that didn't help. Didn't know you could update the drivers.
I took the laptop apart and took out the left/right button part.
I got a new one on ebay (not expensive) and I'm going to replace the part and see if that helps.
I'll let you know.
