The hinge on the left side, where the screen meets the keyboard is separating and it seems like the black trim around the screen is starting to separate as well. I absolutely love my laptop, as it was a birthday gift from my husband. I am still learning how to use it and would hate to replace the whole laptop due to a defect. I've read online that this is a common issue with HP and I do believe the same thing happened to my kids' HP laptop years ago. It bothers me that this happened, because I am very careful when using it. The laptop has never been mishandled or dropped. Just started to separate one day. I see it's getting worse the more I use it, so I have resorted to using my husband's laptop. I truly hope someone can point us in the right direction, as our warranty has expired. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this matter.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
