The "disk" keeps going way up to 100%, then it will drop down very quickly to zero, but I am not opening or closing anything when it is doing this. When it is really high, the top two items are MsMpEng.exe and mcbuilder.exe.

The former is the Microsoft anti-virus program ("Windows Security Essentials" or, in Windows 10, "Windows Defender").
The latter is "Microsoft Resource Cache Builder".
It could be that whatever MCBUILDER is doing, it is creating files, and then the anti-virus program is scanning each file, as it is being written.
I've never noticed MCBUILDER being an "intensive" program on my system.

> Lastly, I opened a command prompt and typed in what you pasted below, but it kept giving me an error when I hit ENTER.
When you see that window, type CMD and press ENTER.
Then, in the window that opens, type DIR C:\*.SYS /A and press ENTER.
At least one blank after DIR and least one blank before /A ... no blanks anywhere else.
Tell us the output that it generates.

I am having this exact same problem on my laptop when using VMWare while trying to work remotely from home. It just started yesterday 6/29/17. I get a low memory error that says VMWare is the problem and it is the only program I have running. Then the screen blacks out and I have to power off and restart my machine. Please help.
