Do we therefore have a "white list" with m.2 NVMe devices if only the Samsung SM951 will work?

@Blake5

Notice what type of drives are listed for your laptop!:smileysurprised:  I do see a 1TB NVMe SSD listed.

@Huffer

Is the HP part listed in error?  NVMe without the m.2 designation.  Same listing for the non-refurb model.

Its not actually a whitelist just compatibility....the motherboard just will not make a handshake with unknown storage controller chips on disks that did not exist when the motherboard was designed.

Sounds like a "white list" to me.:smileysad::smileysurprised:

mzvpv512hdgl nvme for the Samsung sm951 is not available via HP Parts Surfer.

Exactly....we can talk all day long about woulda, coulda but if the disk will not work the speed is beside the point. I have a couple HP laptops with NVME disks...one has the SM951 and the other I think has a PM961...both are very fast but the PM961 is faster. The SM951 is used on a 6th gen motherboard (Zbook 15 G3) and the PM961 is on a 7th gen motherboard.

Can you perhaps return the ADATA XPG?

@Big_Dave I use the HP Parts Store....the link I gave should allow the OP to order the disk.

White list to me is intentional exclusion by BIOS Code...it would work at the hardware level but I am going to block it as HP did for years with non-HP WIfi cards...I think this is another phenomenon but end result is the same...no worky.

@Huffer

No dice with either the Parts Store or Part Surfer.

We still have the issue with the manual listing NVMe support.

First couple of searches didn't find the SSD but a third attempt did.  Go figure.

Thank you all!

I ended up trying to update the XPG firmware, but nothing happened since the motherboard won't recognize the drive. I am going to try to return the ssd tonight. Do you think the motherboard would be compatible with the PM961, or should I play it safe and just go with the SM951?
