Hello, I want to upgrade my laptop's storage to an M.2 NVMe Samsung 980 pro 2tb, should I buy the one with the heatsink or the one without the heatsink?

Please reply if you have any answers.

Hi:

I don't know if you can install a M.2 NVMe SSD with such a large storage capacity.

You don't want to waste your money on a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD in your notebook, because the slot is only Gen 3.

Not only that, but any PCIe Gen 3 NVMe SSD you install will only run at 1/2 of its advertised speed in the 15-da0xxx model series since the drive will only be able to use two of the PCI express lanes for some unknown reason.

I'd buy a less expensive drive such as the Western Digital Blue SN570.

Below is the link to the service manual.

Chapter 1 has the supported drive types.

HP only offered NVMe SSD's up to 512 GB in that model series.

Theoretically a 2 TB drive would work but I can't guarantee it will.

@MetalBasket4236

Do you play games very often ? In my case, I don't play games and only use machine (this one) for this forum (well close to 100%) Samsung Magician software shows it is only around 38°C to 42°C.

If gaming to much, you may need heat-sink.

Regards.

Hello thanks for the help, I just wanna ask one more thing. Can I upgrade the ram to a crucial 16gb ddr4 with a clock of 3200Mhz?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB and I know that the Crucial report indicates the max memory is 2 x 16 GB.

You can do this to confirm how much memory your notebook can support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

If the report indicates you can install 32 GB of memory, you can install up to 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, but the memory is only going to run at a maximum speed of 2133 MHz, because that is the fastest speed your notebook's processor can run the memory at.
