Thanks for chiming in! I'm working on my last theoretical solution, so I will be posting back either way (unless someone else comes up with something). I saw your thread on the slot connection question, and regardless of if the slot is upside down or not, the M.2 SSDs will only fit in one way (unless you shove it in there or something!). Also, the two that I've tried are the Samsung Evo 850 M.2 250GB and the Samsung Evo M.2 500GB--just a fyi.

The m.2 slot is not an upside down M slot. If it was, then the surface mount ICs would face down and there would be no room for the SSD to fit. Therefore, the slot is for single sided modules.  The M.2 slot will have only one key although the module can have two keys (B and M).  Additionally, you will find that the number of pins from the edge and the key are different between the B and M keys.  This should prevent a module containing both B and M keys from being inserted upside down.

M.2 slots can work with three different types of media depending BIOS and motherboard design. With some designs, the m.2 slot can be either PCIe, SATA or both.

M.2 PCIe NVMw

M.2 PCIe non-NVMe

M.2 SATA

According to the stocked parts for similar models that are equipped with M.2 SSDs, the module is a SATA-3 SSD.

Did you try a "hard reset"? You might just get lucky.

Hard reset? Meaning, removing the RTC Battery, waiting, then plugging it back in and rebooting? Yup... and I even had my fingers crossed! lol

If that's not what you mean by "hard reset," please do tell! 🙂

Side Note: How do you "mention" someone in a post?

Unplug the laptop, remove the battery and then hold the power button down for 60 seconds.   You might get lucky.

@Big_Dave, @soundprizm,

I swapped for a brand new laptop from BestBuy this afternoon.  Same problem.

I tried the 60 second power button reset, didn't help.

I am going to "amazon"  an adata SSD now, I'll keep you posted on the results.

Tried the same laptop model with Samsung 950 PRO 500GB. When I plugged the card, the laptop doesn't even turn on. Only the power light turn on for a second and then it shuts down. When I remove the card it starts normally

Sorry guys, I wasn't able to monitor the thread over the weekend...

I also tried the "Hard Reset;" no go...

@QuadTips

Please let us know how that Adata works out for ya!

@lexandorf

The Samsung 950 Pro is a PCIe SSD M.2 and will not work with our model; only SATA M.2 SSDs will work.

@Big_Dave

I received my AData drive today per your suggestion.  No luck.

So Far I Have Tried:

  1.  Samsung 950 Pro (Yes I know that will never work)
  2.  Generic 128 Meg M.2 SSD
  3.  Samsung 850 EVO 120
  4.  Samsung 850 EVO 250
  5.  AData SP900 SATA 6Gb/s / M.2 2280 SSD

After the first four didn't work, I took the laptop back to BestBuy and exchanged for a new laptop. I then tried #4 again, that did not work so I purchased #5 from Amazon and tried that.

I think what no one has been able to express is that there is no place in the BIOS to configure any kind of menu that even talks about what SATA devices are hooked up.  In most systems I would expect there to be some kind of menu item where you tell the system that there is new hardware.

I read on forum where people "hack" the BIOS files to get additional features from insydeH20 BIOSes.  I have also read where some people have been able to get additional BIOS options by holding down special keys while holding F10.

I'm sure there is just something silly I am not doing.  I have attached some photos (they take a while to be approved) to this message in hopes that when you look closely you will notice "Hey there is a menu missing"

I have installed the lastest BIOS available from HP and updated all the drivers that came out on the 8th of January.

Please Help
